When most people decide to get dogs, they do so because they see dogs as they are: fun-loving companions who are affectionate and want to be around you without judgment or reservation.

Another truth about dogs, however, is that they need that level of attention all the time. You can have dogs who are of a cooler temperament, who can get along without you for a while, but in the end, they still require a great deal of emotional investment.

Their recycling habits - urinating and defecating - are habits built in assuming that they’ll be outdoors. In other words, they do it when and where they please.

The solution, therefore, is the litter box. It provides an out of the way place that concentrates the cat’s material, which masks the odors and makes for convenient cleaning.

If you have a tarantula and you want to feed it, you need to know that it prefers to eat live food. This is simply the nature of the beast, for better or for worse. This introduces a great many factors for you to consider.

To begin with, you have to buy your food while it’s still alive. Not the worst thing that could happen - it’s only grasshoppers and crickets - but that means you have to time it right. You have to know when your tarantula is hungry, and when it isn’t.

When you decide to feed it, make sure it’s in the tank. Keep it down there. Don’t take your eyes off of it for a second, because they love to escape and find their way elsewhere. If it’s on the side, poke it back down.

You drop the cricket down with a pair of tongs, and then cover the terrarium back up again.

Taking a trip with your pet is one thing. Making sure it’s enjoyable is something else again.

Dogs will eat just about anything you put down in front of them. But that does not give you the license to feed them just anything.

The fact is that dogs are different from each other, just on account of size if nothing else. That means they’re going to require different amounts of calories to maintain themselves at a healthy weight.

They don’t know that, of course. They’re dogs. Their nature is to eat what they can find and then trot it off over the course of a day or so on the way to their next meal.

There’s no sense in trying to engineer the nature out of the dog on this point.

Instead, it just makes more sense to feed them food that’s formulated for their body type, and to feed it to them in such quantity that they can work it off and be healthy, as opposed to suffering the diseases of society.

One of the odd things we’ve noticed about pet owners is the stuff that they’ll buy for their pets.

Not that we have a problem with that. People should buy things for their pets. Pets are companions. One of the greatest things you can do for your pet is to make sure that you have toys for them to play with so that they don’t get bored.

Here’s the thing, though. There’s actually a time to buy toys and a time not to buy toys. It’s true. Buying a rope for your dog so you can play tug of war with him doesn’t make much sense if you’re not going to be there to play tug of war.

In general, though, it’s better to hold off on buying toys until your pets are into their adolescence. Their youth should be spent on getting trained and used to the idea of reward. After that, you can reward them with toys, and it’ll mean something to them.

Otherwise, it’s nothing. There is nothing. You’ll find yourself looking for ways to climb the walls, you’ll be so bored.

That’s what it’s like to be a parrot. We don’t let them fly, and because they have a dangerous beak, we hardly let them out of their cage either. But if they can’t fly and they can’t bite, what else is there for them to do? They get slower, lazier as the time goes by, and that means that they’re less fun to be around.

You get them a stand, and it’s good for you and them both. It’s good for them because it gives them something else to hop up and move around on. It’s a toy. Parrots benefit from play the same way we do.

And we benefit because they’re more excited, and less ill-tempered. That’s a good bird, don’t you think?

The idea of an aquarium needing cleaning is a little counter-intuitive, isn’t it? You don’t think of it as something that needs to happen. It’s a water environment. The water is constantly moving. You’ve never seen a fish poop, and they come in pretty clean anyway, don’t they?
